I spent 7 days without Social Media

I hosted a one-week Social Media Detox Challenge, and wanted to take this time to share my reflection with you.

I struggled at the beginning of the week when I found myself unconsciously searching for Instagram on my phone or typing "YouTube" in the web browser. I was filling the gap in time and attention by defaulting to social media instead of being intentional with what I wanted to do next.

Throughout the challenge, we hosted a several events as opportunities to help people build more mindful and productive habits. Personally, I learned a few things about these activities:

  1. Co-working - Doing focused work with people is fun! Even though we didn't really talk, it was satisfying getting some extra work done before the end of my day. Based on the feedback I received, it seemed like people would be interested in more co-working sessions! (Interested in joining the next one? Click Here)

  2. Meditation - As a beginner in the practice, I struggled to last longer than 5 minutes of silent meditation. Our instructor, Greg, introduced us to mantras and helped me reach 12 minutes! I still struggled throughout that 12 minutes, but the point of the mantra is to anchor us back to the present moment.

  3. Yoga - If you knew me well, you'd know I'm not a flexible person. Yoga hurts! 🀣 To top it off, anything more than 30-minutes of yoga turns me off. But our yoga instructor, Danielle, eased us into each movement. I appreciate her approach because I didn't feel too self-conscious about my lack of flexibility.

I am glad we got to host this challenge for anyone who wanted to be more intentional with their time and energy. Based on the feedback I got, it sounded like people enjoyed it and were able to be more aware of their relationship with social media!

By the end of the week, I'll admit, I still typed "Youtube" on my web browser a few times a day. But for the most part, I got to complete a few extra tasks for the week, started listening to podcasts again, and felt more present in the moment when interacting with loved ones!

My relationship with social media has been reset and I was able to shift my attention and focus on more meaningful habits and activities. πŸ™Œ
