The One Thing That's Helped with my Personal Growth

If you’re reading this article, it’s probably safe to assume you have some interest in living with more intention.

You may have read a book or two focused on personal growth. Maybe you’re the type that uses to-do lists, calendars, or some sort of organization tool.

And you may have done some sort of future-looking exercise where you envision what your future self can be like. (Remember https://www.futureme.org/?)

For over 7 years, I’ve been doing all of those things. I’ve read a ton of personal development books, I’ve learned how to use Trello, Notion, and other organization apps, and I’ve written many letters from my future self to ensure I know what I’m working towards.

A lot of these resources are great, and it’s true that they can help you live the life you want, but there’s one thing that’s missing from all of them.

I wished I knew this back then, but if I could go back in time to give advice to my younger self, it’d be this:

Personal growth, being more productive, and prioritizing your mental health all require self-awareness. To grow and live with more intention, you must first begin to understand yourself.

Self-awareness will allow you to be clear about your skills and limitations. You’ll also understand what you value in life.

Only then will you be able to determine which personal growth strategies will work for you (Not all tips and life advice work for everyone).

You’ll also be able to stay focused on the important and impactful tasks/activities in your to-do list or calendar.

You’ll know where you currently are in your journey and what needs to be done to work towards your future self.

How do you become more self-aware?

Listed are several options ranging from free to paid:

  • Journaling

  • Meditation

  • Sharing & discussing with loved ones

  • Joining a community of like-minded people where you can share resonating experiences

  • Therapy

  • And more!

Personally, I use a mix of all of those activities and resources. They all allow me to understand myself and realize I’m not alone in my thoughts and struggles. If you’re interested in living with more intention, I highly recommend trying one of the above suggestions.

Know that you’re not alone and joining a community where you can be vulnerable and feel heard can help you immensely.
